Mission statement about SPLAT
Overview:
My name is Michael Guggenheim. I am almost 13 years old, and have graduated from 6th Grade, and will start middle school in the fall at Wildwood School in Los Angeles, California. I overcame a challenge called Dysgraphia, which is a motor processing problem which makes it difficult for me to write and to get my thoughts out on paper (attached is a description published by a branch of the “International Dyslexia and Dysgraphia Association”). The tool that changed everything for me was learning how to use a computer or laptop. Now I want to share this tool with all children so that they can have the future they want too. Nowadays if you do not know how to type or have basic computer skills, it is difficult to get a good job and you will be left behind in the world. These skills are easier to learn when you are young. For example, I began to use programs such as excel, word and power point in my school papers and math assignments as early as third grade, but many adults are unable to do this. Many disadvantaged kids and teenagers do not have early opportunity and access to learning and using these computer skills and it is difficult to catch up later.
Mission: My mission is to provide computers and learning software to children in shelters, low income residential projects and community centers because they might not otherwise have enough opportunities to learn how to use these tools. My other mission is to be able to give every child I tutor a laptop when his/her family leaves a transitional living center to a home of their own.
How I have already been reaching my goal: I have formed the non-profit 501 (c) corporation named S.P.L.A.T. – Showing People Learning and Technology. My Articles of Incorporation have been stamped by the Secretary of State and can be provided to all potential donors as proof of SPLAT’s status and intent. I have also a federal Trademark registration for SPLAT. I have also been approved by the I.R.S. as an exempt corporation under Section 501 c 3 of the Internal Revenue Code, and SPLAT’s Federal Tax Identification No. is 26-0642173, and my donors can receive a charitable tax credit on their tax reports. I have also established an wordpress website for SPLAT: http://splatcharity.wordpress.com/
If you go to SPLAT’s website, you can learn about what SPLAT has accomplished this last year. I have received monetary donations, software, and laptop donations from many companies and people who are listed as donors in my website. If you go to the second page of SPLAT’s website “Posts”, you can find the links to a Los Angeles Times article dated January 7, 2008 which profiled SPLAT’s work at the Los Angeles Family Housing, Transitional Living Center (TLC), located in North Hollywood, CA. You can also use the link (or go to http://youtube.com/ and search “Michael Guggenheim”) and view the interviews that Good Morning America and CNN Headlines filmed earlier this year about SPLAT.
I have been tutoring students every week at TLC and I am happy to report that several of my students’ families have graduated to their own homes and each of these students have received a laptop to take with them. I am training some of my friends to continue the tutoring at TLC, and I am planning to launch SPLAT at a new Westside location, closer to my Middle School (since my mom still has to drive me after school!). I will continue to ask people and companies to donate laptops, software or money so that I can continue to give laptops to every kid from the two locations where SPLAT will hopefully be working with kids.
Conclusion: Over the past year, these kids have taught me so much and have all been so nice, polite, and so appreciative of the tutoring time and laptops they receive. After seeing all these great kids it enlightens my heart to see them going to their own homes with their own laptops and smiles on their faces.

Hello Michael,
I just read about your work and organization on latimes.com. Are you familiar with the One Laptop Per Child Project? It is an effort to bring laptops and technology and the opportunity to learn to all children. They are very cheap, ~$200 a piece, and include great educational software on them for free. You can find more information at laptop.org. I think that you would be interested in checking out the program, it appears to mesh well with what you are trying to do.

Hi Michael –
I read the article in the LA Times website and think you are doing a great thing for those less fortunate. I work for a non-profit in Birmingham, Ala., and wanted to share a few technology tips for non-profits. You can register for Techsoup.org once you get your 501(3)c status. It is based out of San Francisco and only serve only non-profits with donations of new software and recycled computers. You should also consider looking at the Case Foundation for grant assistance in getting equipment. They have a great write your own funding campaign. You also should register with Guidestar. They track non-profits and how they use their money. Using this article and blog would be a great way to also get donations using a third party like Network 4 Good. Just some tips. Hope the help. Keep up the good work! You are making a difference!

Nifty story in the LA Times. Glad to hear how you are using what you’ve learned. I’ve always felt the best teaching comes from remembering and sharing how I learned things, especially from others, and then making improvements.
If you ever think about using blogging as a part of tutoring, you might want to consider adding the edublogs.org which has some pretty interesting fellow teachers and classrooms (and uses the same WordPress.com software.) paulhami.edublogs.org has some interesting free resources to try, also.
(sorry for the extra links. I hope this doesn’t fall into the Akismet trap.)

Hi Michael,
I was in your area this morning and left a CD with “Blues Clues” math games on your front porch.
It was great working with you on the ABC report for GMA. I will try to find my daughters old software for your program.

Hi Michael,
I am a Special Education teacher at a private boarding school for students with ADHD, Non-Verbal Learning Disabilities and Asperger’s Syndrome. Many of my students have dysgraphia and we have provided Alpha Smarts and computers as an accomodation in the classroom. It is amazing to see the stress levels disappear with this intervention! We are in the process of setting up a computer lab and I would love to be able to get your feedback on software that you have tested. Keep up the good work!

Hi Michael,
I just want to thank you for the work you’re doing. I saw you on Good Morning America this morning & I was very impressed. What you are doing is so important to the kids you’re helping. I agree that your efforts will help these kids to succeed in life. As a Preschool Teacher, my greatest reward was that I knew that I was making a positive difference in the life of my students. I hope that you feel rewarded in the knowledge that you are making a difference too!

You are a modern day hero Michael. Thanks for the inspiration to be a more loving and giving person.

Hi Michael:
First of all, I was extemely impressed with the dedication and hard work exhibited by you; but, even more importantly, to meet a young student whose parents have invested such a strong value system that embraces those less fortunate is a rare gift indeed in these times.
As a long time educator and a former educator teaching in a shelter, I can see so much positive impact that you are having. Their lives have been impoverished, and yet they are all the more richer having known you.
I am praying that you will continue the good work that you’ve begun!! I plan to share your story with my Second grade class.
All the Best,
Mrs. Hammond

My son is seven and has dysgraphia. He will be getting an AlphaSmart in the next few weeks – I am so grateful for your work! There is a new level of awareness for Learning Disabilities like dysgraphia because of the work you do, which makes places like ABC and the LA Times sit up and pay attention. But more than that I can say to my son “See? Look at the good this boy is doing!!”
Thank you – keep up the good work!

Michael,
Saw the story about you on Good Morning America. Keep up the good work.
I too have dysgraphia but didn’t get my first computer until college. Technology has been a great tool for me.

What an outstanding story from an even more outstanding young man making a difference in his community.
I’d like to get you on our show for an interview and help to start a campaign to get you laptops from those that aren’t using older machines.
Would you mind contacting us and let us know when we can do something like that? We have a large and growing audience that I think would be in your charity’s wheelhouse.
Thanks again for helping to continue to make a difference in your community. While you won’t always get people telling you that it’s appreciated, the lives and futures of the children you touch will last a lifetime and beyond.

Michael, I have recently donated to “One Laptop Per Child Project” It is an effort to bring laptops and technology and the opportunity to learn to all children. The laptops include great educational software on them for free. More information at laptop.org. When they first got started with this program if you donated funds to send a lap top to another country they would sedn you one of the computors to the person that donated funds also. I have three of those and would be willing to donated them to your cause I just need a place to send them.
